Da Shop is a story about three young men and their
day-to-day life working in a barbershop called 'Hair
Force One'. Hair Force, owned by the sassy, foul mouthed, Texas bread diva, Ms Patrice Flowers, is the only African American owned business in Da Ville (a small community located in Queens, NYC). These three barbers, Kuttie, Koolie, and Mikey, are equally talented and have individual goals but are not sure how to achieve them. Little do they know, the path to their destiny lies within Da Shop!
Khary 'Kuttie' Johnson is the stable force in Da Shop. He's a barber-cartoonist who creates designs in his client's hair as well as he does on paper. Don't let his youthful looks fool you. It's been said that this 20 year old barber has an 'old soul' as he listens to the advise of his elders and mentors to the youth in Da Shop. Although he may appear to have every situation under control, he struggles with his talents. Kuttie has a difficult time deciding if he should be a full time cartoonist or full time barber. During his internal tug-of-war, he plays the part of referee in order to break up the many quarrels between Mikey and Koolie. As you can see, Kuttie definitely has his hands full.
Hassan 'Koolie' Punjabi had no intention on working in a barbershop when he came to America at the age of 16. Koolie is the suave, easygoing barber-writer who has a
great love for literature and aspires to publish his own poetry book in the future. Kuttie asked Koolie to help
assist him in Da Shop during college. Not knowing Mikey was in the scenario, Koolie agreed to learn how to cut hair and have fun at Hair Force One. Tension builds up on an everyday basis between Koolie and Mikey. As a result, Kuttie finds himself back in the same situation he was in from the beginning...Cutting all the hair.
Miguel 'Mikey' Lopez is the youngest barber in Da Shop. Mikey is the 'Puerto Rican Thug' from The Bronx who pretends to cut hair when Ms Rowers is around and sells
bootleg CD'S and DVD's when she's away. He sees Da Shop as more so a 'hang out' spot for him to hustle clients and crack jokes all day. Like Koolie, Kuttie met Mikey
in Da Ville High School and they've been friends ever since. Unlike Kuttie, Mikey dropped out of high school
in his sophomore year to peruse his 'street dreams'.
Being unsuccessful in his plan led him back to Kuttie
a year later. Although Mikey hinders Ms. Flowers' barbershop with his street edge, he protects Kuttie
from the neighborhood hustlers who attempt to take advantage of his skills. He also specializes in speaking 'Spanglish'.
These characters as well as a neighborhood of clientele make up the whole experience of Da Shop, which is not just a place of business. Da Shop is a way of life.
